Key West Airport to Old Town: Taxi, Rideshare, Bus, or Rental Car?

Choose the best way from Key West International Airport to Old Town by comparing taxis, rideshare, hotel shuttles, transit, luggage, parking, and rental cars.

Updated September 28, 2026 · 8-minute arrival guide
THE SHORT ANSWER

For many Old Town stays, a taxi or rideshare is the lowest-friction choice because it solves the airport transfer without creating a parking problem. Use a confirmed hotel shuttle when its hours and luggage rules fit, public transit when the current schedule and walking segment work for your group, and a rental car when the rest of the trip—not just the airport ride—requires repeated driving.

Choose the fewest handoffs, not the lowest headline fare

The easiest arrival is the one that still works after baggage, waiting, the hotel location, and the return trip are counted. Key West International Airport lists permitted ground-transportation categories including taxis, ride shares, courtesy shuttles, buses, and rental cars. Provider schedules, prices, capacity, and accessibility can change, so confirm the option that affects your trip directly.

If the hotel is in Old Town and most of the itinerary is walkable, a direct vehicle to the hotel often beats renting a car that will sit. Start with the complete transfer, then use the three-day Key West itinerary to group the rest of the trip by neighborhood.

Taxi: the clearest low-friction default

A taxi works well when everyone lands together and the goal is a direct hotel transfer without app setup or a rental counter. Confirm the current airport rate structure before travel and ask the driver which rate applies before departure.

Tell the dispatcher about wheelchairs, child seats, oversized luggage, or a larger party before joining a vehicle. Airport ground-transportation rules and provider availability control the actual trip; an old review does not.

Rideshare and hotel shuttles: convenient when the details line up

The airport currently identifies Uber and Lyft pickup along the blue curb outside and to the right of Arrivals and Baggage Claim. Compare the live total only after every traveler and bag is ready, confirm the license plate in the app, and choose a vehicle large enough for the group.

A hotel shuttle can be the best-value option, but a property name on an airport list does not guarantee that every guest, room rate, arrival time, or date qualifies. Ask whether a reservation is required, when the service stops, where to wait, what luggage it accepts, and what the backup is after a delay.

Public transit: price the walk and the schedule too

The airport directs bus riders toward Faraldo Circle and tells travelers to contact the provider for current schedule and fare information. The City of Key West likewise directs riders to current route and real-time information and warns that seasonal traffic can delay buses.

Transit is most practical with manageable luggage, schedule flexibility, and lodging near the right stop. Count the walk at both ends and any transfer. Heat, rain, young children, mobility needs, or oversized bags can make a direct vehicle the better arrival-day choice even when the bus fare is lower.

Rental car: make the rest of the trip justify it

A rental becomes useful when the itinerary continues through the Lower Keys, the lodging is outside the walkable core, or the group needs repeated door-to-door control. Before reserving, ask the hotel whether parking is included, valet-only, off-site, limited, or unavailable.

The City currently lists the Old Town Park N Ride Garage at 301 Grinnell Street as a 300-space, first-come facility open around the clock except during evacuations. The posted rates are $6 per hour plus tax or $48 per day plus tax, and special-event rates may apply. Recheck them close to travel. If the car solves only one airport transfer, compare its full rental and parking cost with two direct rides.

Protect the first real commitment

Work backward from the first reservation you cannot miss. Leave room for flight arrival, baggage delivery, transfer, hotel check-in, and a meal before any boat or timed ticket. Confirm luggage storage rather than assuming an operator can hold bags.

For most short Old Town stays, the clean sequence is simple: collect every bag, take one direct transfer, check in, and keep the first afternoon compact. Save the major water booking for a day with a dependable start, and keep the first sunset land-based when flight timing is uncertain.

Arrival checklist

  • Save the hotel street address, not only its name.
  • Confirm the party size, child-seat needs, mobility needs, and luggage count.
  • Recheck the airport pickup instructions and the provider's current terms.
  • Ask the hotel about parking before renting a car.
  • Keep medication and essentials in a bag that stays with you.
  • Avoid a tight, nonrefundable activity immediately after landing.
